Cambridge Genetics Knowledge Park

Description of Business:

The Cambridge Genetics Knowledge Park (CGKP) is one of six in England and Wales, funded by the Genetics Knowledge Challenge Fund established by the Department of Health and the Department of Trade and Industry. The CGKP aims to promote knowledge about human genetics and to stimulate its transfer into the health service for the benefit of society. We are doing this by:

1. Creating and supporting a network of individuals and organisations in and around Cambridge with active interests in human genetics.

2.Transforming information about genetics into knowledge through critical appraisal, by seeking the perspective of patients and the public, and by placing it in its ethical, legal and social context.

3.Stimulating the transfer of genetic research into clinical and commercial benefits through programmes designed to promote sharing and dissemination of genetics knowledge.

4.Providing national leadership in developing policy for the application of genetics in health services.

The Cambridge Genetics Knowledge Park is a network of organisations and individuals that brings together five key spheres of activity - clinical; commercial; ethical, legal and social; public health; and scientific. Organisations that represent the views of patients and the wider public are also included.

The CGKP aims are as follows:

To create and support a network of individuals and organisations in and around Cambridge with active interests in human genetics by fostering collaboration between academics in the sciences and humanities, public health professionals, clinicians and the commercial sector.

To transform information from scientific studies on genetics into knowledge through its validation by critical appraisal, by seeking a patient and public perspective, and by placing it in its ethical, legal and social context.

To stimulate the transition from research into clinical and commercial benefits through programmes and activities designed to promote intensive dissemination and sharing of genetics knowledge.

To provide national leadership in public health genetics and to contribute to the development of genetics policy for health and health services by working closely with policy makers in government and other institutions.
