Description The ALU was formed in response to the urgent need for a centre of excellence specializing in coordinated, international logistics expertise. We provide a high quality learning environment with close links to the military, the defence industry and the public sector. We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, short courses, and research and consultancy opportunities. All parts of the business of defence are experiencing rapid change. The so called 'peace dividend' has allowed most NATO member governments to examine and reduce defence expenditure. This is against the backdrop in the UK of a very high number of military deployments. The need for enhanced financial management and accountability in this complex area has brought new challenges. At the same time microprocessor technology has enabled the development of new generations of weapons systems, which inherently adds to the need for training and places agreater emphasis on supporting activities than before. The ubiquitous microchiphas also enhanced the power of management systems leading to new challenges for decision support and an organisation's knowledge capital. ALU Business Objectives: To promote knowledge exchange mechanisms in the subject area. To establish a Centre of Excellence in the research of defence acquisition and logistics, internally for the University and externally in the world market. To develop world class postgraduate programmes for an international student audience. To develop international management training programmes for organisations in the defence sector. To invest in the development of staff through co-ordinated, encouraged research and disseminate this underpinning knowledge by publications. To generate financial sustainability to provide for investment. To develop alliances with other organisations; academic, military or business for the development of business opportunities synonymous with the core of research and teaching in the defence logistics arena
