Scientists agree that human-induced global warming is very real (see Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). We are warned that the costs of doing nothing far exceed the costs of significant early reductions in global carbon emissions (see the Stern Review).

In order to achieve the necessary reductions in carbon emissions, current managers need information about emerging national and international science, policies and market opportunities, and they need to develop the relevant strategic tools so as to make confident decisions and engineer organisational change.

This is exactly what the MBA in Strategic Carbon Management aims to deliver. Its primary aim is to prepare the next generation of managers to lead confidently in the global transition to a low carbon business environment.

"This MBA is leading the field alongside innovative companies in demonstrating that being climate friendly is good business." Dr Bob Watson, Chief Scientist, World Bank

Managers will develop an understanding of the current climate change debate, policies, regulations and the role of business in reducing carbon emissions, whilst also learning to create innovative business models to lead towards emerging low carbon market opportunities.

It is a twelve month intensive and dynamic learning experience that will change your life.

Why UEA?

UEA was voted as the top English university for Student Satisfaction in the National Student Survey, shortlisted for The Sunday Times University of the Year, received the highest endorsement from the Quality Assurance Agency, has one of the greatest concentrations of 'most highly cited researchers' in the UK and came top of the most recent research effectiveness league table published by Research Fortnight.

UEA is globally recognised as a pioneer in both climate change science and international development. The programme for the MBA in Strategic Carbon Management has been designed so as to draw on the strengths of leading scholars across a number of highly regarded Schools:

"The School of Environmental Sciences at UEA is the strongest in the world" Professor Sir David King, UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser.

Established for 39 years, the School of Environmental Sciences has become a world leader in understanding the realities of environmental issues and their impact on the global economy and society. It has more than 160 academics and 200+ postgraduate students and is regarded as home to some of the key international climate and environmental scientists. The School  has the top national rankings in research (double-5*) and was awarded an 'excellent' rating in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment.

Members of the School play major roles in Climate Change policy; providing 9 convening/lead authors in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 4th assessment process and 2 colleagues making significant contributions to The Stern Review.

The University already has a well established Carbon Reduction programme (CRed) which was set up as a direct result of the UEA's focus on outreach activity: enabling research to achieve results. Case studies and experience from CRed's work will play an important role within the programme.

  • The Norwich Business School MBAs offer an advantage for students who require practical application of management knowledge and skills. For example, the more usual dissertation is replaced with two assessed consultancy projects and the Carbon Connections Challenge, and problem based learning approaches are extensively adopted - not regularly found in MBA courses.

A compulsory Career Impact Programme has been devised specifically to support all full time MBA students. This will provide ongoing student reflection on personal and professional development and enhance future employability.
