The fundamentals of manufacturing management

Evening workshop series, Cambridge, 9 October - 4 December, 2008

These five workshops offer a unique programme for managers and production supervisors who need an introduction to the basic principles of effective production management. Each workshop will focus on a key business area and will demonstrate how fundamental principles can be used to solve everyday management problems. The workshops are suitable for recently appointed managers and experienced supervisors, as well as established managers who would like to refresh their understanding of basic management practice. A certificate of attendance will be sent to attendees at the end of the series.

Thursday 9th October - Production Systems 

Course presenter - Derek Ford

  • Production planning and control systems
  • Quality systems and techniques
  • Reporting and control systems
  • Managing the supply chain

The first workshop will look at the systems underpinning production management. It will show how these are used to plan and control activities to achieve performance targets.

Thursday 23rd October - Project Management

Course presenter - Nicky Athanassopoulou

  • Project scoping
  • Establishing an achievable plan
  • Delivering the project
  • Past project audit and review

This workshop will show how to improve the results of various types of project through effective scoping, planning and management routines.

Thursday 6th November - new product development

Course presenter - Tom Ridgman

  • Designing the product development process
  • Common problem areas
  • Getting into production
  • Simple trends

The third workshop will explore the tools, process and people involved in effective new product development.

Thursday 20th November - Finance

Course presenter - TBC

  • Profit and loss statements and the balance sheet
  • Management accounting
  • Managing operational budgets
  • Justifying capital expenditure

This workshop will provide an introduction to company finances. Building on the first workshop it will show how achieving performance targets can lead to successful company results.

Thursday 4th December - Management of People 

Course presenter - Paul Heffernan

  • Empowerment and communication
  • Developing teamwork
  • Leadership versus management
  • Improving personal effectiveness

The final workshop will concentrate on people issues, looking at ways to improve performance through more effective use of people.
