What is Industrial CASE?

Industrial CASE is short for The Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science and Engineering. Studentships give companies the opportunity to take on a PhD student for a research project (devised by the company and the University)

What sort of company is Industrial CASE aimed at?

The scheme is available to large and small organisations. In 2007 priority was given to projects consistent with EPSRC's Principle Research Themes namely; Energy, Environment, Manufacturing, Advanced Engineering, ICT and Life Sciences.

How much does it cost the company?

Approximately £7,000 per annum. The company must also commit to the student spending at least 3 months, during the period of the award, at their premises and pay any travel and subsistence costs the student accrues during the period.

How is it funded?

The company is required to provide the minimum of 1/3rd the EPSRC contribution. At present rates this equates to a minimum of approximately £21,000 over the duration of the project.

What is the benefit to the company?

Research is undertaken by a PhD student on a project jointly devised and supervised by the company and University.

How long does the scheme last?

Fixed term of three years.

How and when do I apply?

Applications must be submitted by mid-July and take three to four months to complete, the studentships commence from the October. The scheme is administered by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).
