i10 frequently asked questions

Background & Funding

What is the purpose of i10?

i10 provides businesses with easy access to the expertise and facilities within the universities and higher education institutions in the East of England.

How long has i10 been going?

i10 was formed in 2002.

What is i10 seeking to achieve?

The majority of companies don't consider universities as places to go to find solutions to their business challenges and plans for the future. You may not have a question today - but we want to put i10 on your business radar as a resource that may be able to help. What's more it won't cost you to find out.

Is i10 about graduates and employment?

Graduate employment does feature within our services but is a minor part. i10 is really about knowledge transfer, helping to make engagement with our universities simpler.

How is i10 funded, and for how long?

i10 is funded by the Government's Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF). The current financing period runs to late 2009. We hope that i10 will continue in the longer term.

Is i10 aimed at hi-tech or very scientific businesses?

Not at all, in fact the non-scientific subjects form a much larger proportion of our university activity.

Can you give me some examples of the sort of business engagements you get involved with?

Our business development managers will help your business get involved with research projects, consultancy, funding schemes, graduate schemes, student placements, training, technology transfer, CPD and more.

Who is there to help me?

Our team of business development managers are based across the East of England. Their role is to act as a conduit into the universities, and facilitate your relationship with the university of your choice. Team members have a high degree of commercial experience and knowledge and are out on the front line listening to businesses and building up long-term relationships. To get in touch with them use the contact form or call 0845 234 2314.

Are you able to help with ..... ?

Quite possibly! The first step is to articulate the interest into a specific enquiry, our business development managers can assist here. Your enquiry is put through our Ask i10 service, in confidence, and brokered to the twelve East of England universities. Those universities able to assist will respond directly. Any resulting contract will be solely between you and the individual university providing the service, but it costs nothing to ask! All enquiries are moderated to make sure that they are appropriate before being circulated to the universities. We also work alongside other major agencies who may be able to give useful alternative directions if we cannot assist.

What is the cost?

Access to all i10 services is free. Contracts are negotiated by the business and the university in the normal way. i10 does not get involved in contract negotiations, nor is i10 a charging body, our role is to bring the two parties to the table so that productive and profitable long-term relationships are formed.

What do the universities get out of this?

The universities undertaking projects with businesses can use their expertise in real business situations, which gives them invaluable opportunities to see their latest cutting edge thinking and innovations in action. The successful completion of projects can then be used as case studies which feed back into the teaching curriculum and can also generate positive publicity for the university and the business involved (providing both parties agree to this). Any money that exchanges hands is negotiated in advance by the university and the business in the normal way, and this money becomes a source of funding to sustain further research activity.

What if I don't get any response to my enquiry?

The universities aim to respond to your Ask i10 enquiry within ten days. We are not saying that the universities can help with absolutely every business enquiry but the great majority of Ask i10 enquiries elicit a response.
