Turning muck into megawatts

When the BSE crisis hit Britain in the late 1990s, livestock processing plants were placed in a precarious position. No longer could they use their meat and poultry by-products as feed ingredients, for fear of cross-contamination. Instead, they had to be rendered and incinerated.
